Precision Sheet Metal Fabrication, Machining, Finishing, and Assembly

Design for Manufacture – Tips to go from CAD to Shop Floor Production

Mechanical engineers across a wide range of industries rely on CAD to design complex sheet metal and CNC machined parts. While CAD may be a design engineer’s best friend, it is oftentimes a manufacturing engineer’s worst enemy, as designs on the screen fail to translate to parts that can be manufactured reliably and cost-effectively. Sheet metal enclosures and assemblies often end up having to be redesigned. Revisions mean lost time, lost dollars, and worst of all, more meetings! By following a few Design for Manufacture (DFM) principles, engineers can turn out sheet metal and machined parts that are both highly functional and highly manufacturable, no matter the complexity of the part. Everything from simple brackets to multi-part assemblies with tight tolerances can be designed for optimal production reducing the need for multiple iterations and helping companies put their product to use or get their product to market faster.

Key benefits of Design for Manufacture include:

·      Reduced part cost
·      Ease of manufacturing
·      Save time
·      Minimize part count
·      Uniform/predictable production
·      Ease of assembly
·      One part for multiple uses/products (chassis and enclosures especially).
